Knox County Talented and Gifted Program is an enrichment program for 3rd through 5th grade students.  TAG is for high academic achievers who want or need the additional challenge offered by higher level thinking projects, in-depth research, or development of a particular area of interest.

Success in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program comes mainly from each student’s intrinsic motivation and is dependent upon attitude, behavior, teamwork, cooperation, and willingness to work toward a goal. It is also a process-oriented approach to learning that allows students to extend and explore the curriculum.  Students work in small groups, with partners, and individu
ally to demonstrate learning through projects, products, and presentations. The TAG teacher combines all resources from the regular instructional program to appropriately meet the needs of advanced/gifted students.

When a gifted student whose intellectual ability and potential for achievement are so outstanding that their needs cannot be met in general education with accommodations met through the combined
efforts of general education (enrichment, compacting, acceleration, grouping, independent study,

advanced classes, supplemental learning materials, team teaching), the student may receive special education services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in order to ensure Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

Classroom teachers, Talented and Gifted teachers, the Talented and Gifted Supervisor, Curriculum and Instruction Facilitators, and department supervisors work closely to plan appropriate instruction for students as needed. Knox County Schools is committed to providing opportunities to nurture, challenge, and develop the potential of high ability students.

WORD MASTERS CHALLENGE
Many Knox County Elementary Schools will be participating in the WordMasters Analogy Challenge. This challenge is a national competition for students in grades 3-8 which encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Unlike other language-arts contests, which emphasize grammar and punctuation, this competition addresses higher-level word-comprehension and logical abilities and helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.

The competition does this in two ways:

1)   It challenges students to solve analogies based on relationships among words they have learned, and

2)   It draws these analogies from special vocabulary lists, which students have six weeks to study before each challenge.

There are 3 challenges held throughout the school year. For more information contact the Talented and Gifted teacher at your child's school.

The Word Master words and definitions are listed in the Word Masters file on this site.
