Department Announcements BATTLE OF THE SCHOLARS Dear Parents, This year Knox County Schools will host a Battle of the Scholars competition for participating elementary schools. The goal of the competition is to challenge students to share their knowledge of the curriculum in a competitive, cooperative, and challenging environment. The first part of the competition is a written test given at the school-level between February 10-12, 2010, to any 4th and 5th grade students wishing to participate. No study information will be given to students for the written test. However, the science and social studies curricula are posted on the Knox County website under the science, social studies, and Talented and Gifted departments. The top 25 combined 4th and 5th grade student qualifiers from the written test will advance to a school-based Science/Social Studies Bee held March 17-24, 2010. Seven students will advance from the school-based Science/Social Studies Bee to represent their schools in the countywide regional competition held on April 5, 2010. Four teams will advance from the regional competition to represent their schools in the finals held on April 22, 2010 in the Knox County Board Room of the Andrew Johnson Building. The competitions will be televised on the Public Broadcasting Channel. Parents are welcome to attend the finals. If your child advances to the regional competition, we must have a commitment from the student and parent to continue throughout the entire competition. A commitment letter will be sent home for a signature guaranteeing the commitment to the team, school, and district. It will also be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to get his/her child to the regional competition that will be held at one of the area high schools. On behalf of Knox County Schools, we look forward to our first elementary Battle of the Scholars competition. Sincerely yours, Battle of the Scholars Committee WORD MASTERS CHALLENGE![]() Many Knox County Elementary Schools will be participating in the WordMasters Analogy Challenge. This challenge is a national competition for students in grades 3-8 which encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. Unlike other language-arts contests, which emphasize grammar and punctuation, this competition addresses higher-level word-comprehension and logical abilities and helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. The competition does this in two ways: 1) It challenges students to solve analogies based on relationships among words they have learned, and
2) It draws these analogies from special vocabulary lists, which students have six weeks to study before each challenge.
There are 3 challenges held throughout the school year. For more information contact the Talented and Gifted teacher at your child's school. The Word Master words and definitions are listed in the Word Masters file on this site. |
